Why Should I Take an Omega-3 Supplement?

An average diet contains much more Omega-6 than Omega-3. Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be manufactured naturally within your body. In order to absorb Omega-3 it must be digested from a naturally occurring source. The average person simply does not eat enough foods containing Omega-3 in order to benefit from the many medicinal properties. The other factor when dealing with Omega-6 and Omega-3 is obtaining a proper ratio between the two. If you are have too much Omega-6 in your diet, and not enough Omega-3 you leave yourself open to increased risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and asthma. If you do not take an Omega-3 supplement your radio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 would likely fall somewhere between 10:1 and 20:1. Experts recommend a diet with an Omega-6 to Omega-3 balance of 4:1. To achieve the optimal ratio, it’s recommended you to take an Omega-3 supplement to offset the heavy intake of Omega-6 that is standard in an average North American diet.

Why is Omega-3 and Omega-6 Important?

Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids allow the body to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a hormone-like substance that regulate many activities in your body. Prostaglandins help reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling. Prostaglandins control your blood pressure, heart, kidneys and digestive system. Prostaglandins help control allergic reactions, blood clotting, and also help to create other hormones.

Where Does Omega-3 Come From?

There are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids: Alpha Linolenic Acid (LNA), Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). LNA is found in plant foods, such as nuts, soybeans, canola oil, and flaxseed oil. EPA and DHA are both found in fish and seal oil.

What is DPA in Seal Oil?

DPA (Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA, 22:5 n-3) is a long chain omega-3 fatty acid found in marine animals. DPA is less well-known, because there has not been a lot of studies on DPA. Most research focus on the omega-3 found in fish, namely EPA and DHA. However, as EPA is known for its cardiovascular benefits, DPA has ten times more effective than EPA in healing damaged blood vessels. Since fish contains very small amount of DPA, most studies use the higher dosage of DPA in seal oils. Studies also show that higher consumption of DPA result in lower risk of coronary heart disease.

What Are The Benefits of Seal Oil?

In the 1930’s the Danish were researching the indigenous population of Greenland. The researchers discovered the local population had a uniquely low level of heart disease. Further studies linked the vitality of the people to their diet which included large amounts of fatty fish and seal meat. The Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA and DPA) acted as a natural, long term solution to prevent heart disease.

That said, there is a lot of debate on the effectiveness of Seal Oil over Fish Oil as a natural source for Omega-3 fatty acids. Proponents of Seal Oil point to the fact seals, like humans are mammals and feel there is a closer, more natural connection with the oil produced by a similar species. They also point to studies showing Seal Oil can contain up to 30% more Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) than fish oil.
